Jensen Huang Calls for Adoption of AI by Manual Workers
Jensen Huang, the CEO of Nvidia, has recently called on manual workers, ranging from farmers to electricians, to embrace artificial intelligence (AI). In a conversation with podcaster Lex Fridman, Huang emphasized that AI could not only transform but also enhance manual trades, such as carpentry. Historically, these professions have been perceived as less vulnerable to disruptions caused by AI, unlike office jobs.
According to Huang, the importance of AI is not limited to office environments. As the leader of one of the major chip manufacturers powering the AI revolution, he used his appearance on Fridman's podcast to address various topics, including the impact of AI on the workforce and even in space.
While manual jobs have often been considered relatively protected from technological disruptions compared to more technical roles like engineering, Huang insisted that workers across all sectors, including agriculture and electricity, should adopt AI to ensure the longevity of their trades.
"If I were a farmer, I would absolutely use AI. If I were a pharmacist, I would use AI," Huang stated. "I want to see what it could do to elevate my work so that I can be the innovator who revolutionizes this industry myself."
AI as a Lever for Innovation in Manual Trades
Huang illustrated his point by mentioning that programming represents a significant opportunity for carpenters. According to him, it would be "completely crazy" not to use AI in this field.
"A carpenter with AI is also an architect," he asserted. "They have just increased the value they can offer to the customer. Their art has been significantly enhanced."
Huang has already expressed his certainty that he is "100% sure that all jobs for everyone will be changed" by artificial intelligence. While he anticipates the disappearance of some positions, he also expects the creation of many others. Many tasks will be automated, leading to significant disruption in certain jobs, he explained during Fridman's podcast. However, he added:
"If the purpose of your job includes … then it is essential that you learn to use AI to automate those tasks."
Growing Anxiety Over the Impact of AI
As AI advances, concerns about job security are intensifying. These fears are not unfounded, as many companies have already eliminated thousands of jobs in favor of new technologies and automation.
Huang's proposed solution is to become an AI expert, regardless of the role held. This could make the difference between landing a job or being unemployed. Huang stated that he would prefer to hire a candidate who is an AI expert over one who is not.
"Every college student should graduate as an AI expert," he asserted. This could help them stay ahead of the curve as AI progresses rapidly.
The Era of General Artificial Intelligence
General artificial intelligence (AGI) is a form of AI that evokes both anxiety and excitement among experts in the field. It is based on the idea that AI could one day match or exceed human intelligence. Huang stated that the era of AGI is already here. Fridman asked whether AI could perform Huang's job, which involves creating, developing, and managing a successful technology company valued at over a billion dollars.
According to Huang, it is possible. He also mentioned that it is "not out of the question" that chatbots like Claude from Anthropic could design an application used by billions of people for $0.50 each, only to go bankrupt shortly after, similar to the websites that failed during the dot-com era. Even his position at the helm of one of today's most successful tech companies is not immune to the effects of AI, he stated, urging everyone to adopt this technology before being left behind.
"Go see what it can do to transform your current job, elevate yourself," Huang concluded.
