Nigel Williams, the acclaimed editor known for his work on series such as The Office and Derry Girls, defends the use of artificial intelligence in comedic editing. He believes that AI offers a unique opportunity to refine the timing of jokes, although the film industry remains wary of this technology.

In a discreet experiment, Williams used an AI tool called Flawless to solve a lip-sync issue. Faced with a re-recorded line that did not match the actor's lip movements, he employed Flawless to digitally adjust the actor's lower face, allowing for perfect synchronization with the dialogue. Despite the effectiveness of this solution, producers chose not to incorporate this modification into the final version, expressing their discomfort with the use of AI.

AI, a New Era for Editing

Williams, an expert in comedic timing, sees AI as a natural evolution of editing tools. He compares editing to a form of artistic "cheating," where the manipulation of reality serves the story being told. For him, AI should not replace humans but rather assist them, provided that the consent of the actors is obtained and transparency is maintained.

He emphasizes that AI can be a powerful tool for enhancing actors' performances by adjusting details like lip movements to perfectly match the dialogue. However, he acknowledges that the industry still needs to overcome its hesitations regarding this emerging technology.
