DoorDash Introduces AI Chatbot to Simplify Ordering
DoorDash recently unveiled "Ask DoorDash," an AI-based chatbot that promises to transform the way users place their orders. Announced on Thursday, this new tool allows customers to order food and groceries using text prompts and photos, marking a significant advancement in the integration of AI into everyday services.
The "Ask DoorDash" chatbot offers a more intuitive approach to product searches. Instead of scrolling through a list of restaurants or stores, users can simply describe what they are craving or share a recipe link to get the necessary ingredients. DoorDash emphasized in a blog post that traditional search works best when one knows the exact restaurant or item being sought, while "Ask DoorDash" is designed for moments of uncertainty.
A More Conversational Ordering Experience
Major tech companies, including DoorDash, are betting on AI to make shopping more conversational and personalized. In February, Uber Eats also introduced an AI-powered cart assistant, and Instacart launched an AI shopping assistant for grocery shoppers.
With "Ask DoorDash," users can build their cart from a photo of a cookbook or a grocery list. The chatbot automatically adds the necessary items with the correct quantities while prompting users to check their stock of staple products to avoid redundant purchases.
Personalized Recommendations
The chatbot also offers recommendations based on previous orders. For example, for a "hearty dinner for a family of 4," the app suggests restaurants with personalized descriptions. Users can refine the results by requesting specific options, such as vegetarian dishes suitable for children. Once a location is selected, DoorDash can create a cart with suggestions based on dietary preferences, budget, group size, or past orders.
For reservations, "Ask DoorDash" can find a "table for two downtown for a romantic dinner around 8 PM." The app will display restaurants with availability, and users can narrow their search for more intimate atmospheres.
Gradual Rollout in the United States
Currently being rolled out on iOS, the chatbot is accessible in certain regions for restaurant searches, grocery orders, and DoorDash reservations. DoorDash plans to expand this feature to more users across the United States in the coming weeks.
