Canva recently unveiled a major innovation in graphic design with the launch of Magic Layers. This revolutionary tool, currently in public beta, is available in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia. It allows users to transform flat image files, including those generated by artificial intelligence, into layered and fully editable designs.
According to Cameron Adams, Canva's product director, this advancement is the result of intensive work by the company's AI research team. "There's no need to start over or find the right prompt. Generation is just the beginning - true creative freedom comes from the ability to edit without losing momentum," he stated in a press release.
A Versatile and Innovative Tool
Magic Layers is not limited to AI-generated creations. It supports any single-page PNG or JPEG file, with "expanded capabilities in development." This feature allows Canva users to adjust specific elements of an image without having to recreate it entirely, which represents a significant time saver.
Magic Layers enables users to individually select design components such as objects, text areas, and other graphics while preserving the original layout. The emphasis on using Magic Layers with AI-generated images is linked to Canva's aggressive commitment to its generative AI tools over the past few years.
An Advancement Over Competitors
Compared to other creative software like Photoshop and Adobe's Express, Magic Layers offers a notable advantage. While these applications add generated elements to separate layers, they do not automatically decompose an entire image into layers. Magic Layers thus provides superior manual control, making it easier to edit AI-generated designs.
Magic Layers could give creators better manual control compared to requesting small modifications from an AI assistant. This innovation could transform the way creators interact with AI-generated images. By making designs harder to distinguish from those created traditionally, Magic Layers allows artists to demonstrate their involvement in the creative process. This could also encourage greater adoption of generative AI tools in the field of graphic design.
