Microsoft Takes on the AI Image Generator Market
Microsoft has recently made a notable entry into the realm of AI-based image generators. The company unveiled two new models, named MAI-Image-2.5, which are part of a series of next-generation AI models. These models aim to compete with Google's Nano Banana, regarded as a benchmark in the industry.
Traditionally, Microsoft's AI offerings, such as Copilot, have not been associated with creativity. However, with the launch of the MAI-Image-2.5 models, Microsoft seeks to change this perception. These models include a standard version and a faster version called Flash, each with distinct capabilities.
During the Build conference, Mustafa Suleyman, CEO of Microsoft AI, highlighted the advantages of these new tools. He stated that these models provide precise image editing, with exceptional control and consistency. The Flash model is designed for efficient production workloads, while the 2.5 model aims for maximum fidelity and professional performance.
A Technological Advancement for Microsoft
Precise AI image editing is essential for professionals and businesses. Microsoft illustrated how its new model can adjust images with great accuracy, thus meeting the needs of professional users.
These new models are part of the seven AI models that Microsoft presented during its Build conference. In addition to the image models, Microsoft introduced a reasoning model called MAI-Thinking-1, designed to generate more complex responses through extended processing time. Furthermore, new versions of voice and transcription models were launched, along with an optimized coding model for GitHub, a platform also owned by Microsoft. Microsoft's vision for the future of computing, centered around agentic AI, was also emphasized.
The MAI-Image-2.5 model is now integrated into PowerPoint and available on the enterprise marketplace Foundry, with deployment planned for OneDrive.
Comparison with Competing Models
MAI-Image-2.5 vs. Nano Banana 2
Since its launch in 2025, Google's Nano Banana has dominated the AI image generator sector, thanks to its cutting-edge capabilities. However, it is also associated with the production of low-quality content and deepfakes. It is in this context that Microsoft announced its MAI-Image-2.5 model surpasses Nano Banana in a key area.
According to the results of the Arena AI ranking, a benchmark tool for evaluating AI models, Microsoft's MAI-Image-2.5 excels in image editing, thus outperforming Nano Banana 2. However, Microsoft only ranks second, with OpenAI's GPT-Image-2 currently holding the top position.
The effectiveness of an AI model is not solely measured by a benchmark. Accessibility is also crucial. The choice between using PowerPoint or Google Slides can influence your AI model selection. For professional users, the rights to use AI-generated images are also a determining factor, often depending on the type of business or individual plan chosen.
