Nvidia and the RTX Spark Superchip
Nvidia, which has established itself as the most valuable company in the world thanks to its dominance in the artificial intelligence chip market in data centers, is poised to disrupt the personal computer sector. By entering a field long dominated by Intel, Advanced Micro Devices, Qualcomm, and Apple, Nvidia marks a significant turning point. At the Computex conference in Taiwan, Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, unveiled the RTX Spark superchip, also known as the N1X. This processor, developed in partnership with Microsoft, will be integrated into a new range of Windows PCs from manufacturers such as Dell, HP, ASUS, Lenovo, and MSI, starting this fall.
The RTX Spark stands out for its impressive performance: it features up to 20 Arm CPU cores, a Blackwell GPU with 6,144 CUDA cores, 128 GB of LPDDR5X RAM, and memory bandwidth reaching 300 GB/s. This powerful CPU and GPU are connected via NVLink C2C, providing enough power and space to handle artificial intelligence models with 120 billion parameters, with tasks capable of reaching one million tokens. Although benchmarks are not yet available, Nvidia claims that the RTX Spark is comparable to the DGX Spark, although it is slower than the M5 Max for certain tasks, particularly in decoding, and significantly slower for CPU tasks.
Huang appeared during the presentation via live video to discuss the chip, highlighting its potential to transform the user experience.
Satya Nadella and the Vision for AI
Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, emphasized the growing importance of edge artificial intelligence, stating that the RTX Spark could revolutionize the omnipresence of AI. He said, "Suddenly, this concept of unlimited intelligence at the edge is very much back in vogue." Huang recalled that the idea for this new class of PCs originated from a discussion with Nadella three years ago, aimed at creating powerful machines for creators and AI.
However, the enthusiasm surrounding these innovations is mixed. While AI was once synonymous with ChatGPT, the focus is now on CPU performance. The RTX Spark, although well-suited for current chatbots, may not justify its cost or the software compromises associated with Windows on ARM in a few years.
Microsoft's Solara Project
At the Build conference, Nadella introduced the Solara Project, an initiative by Microsoft to develop AI-based devices running on Android rather than Windows. A team within Microsoft has quietly developed a platform for devices running AI agents instead of applications, with two prototypes already in development and several major companies ready to test these innovations.
Nadella introduced this project by discussing the new capabilities of devices, emphasizing that embedded AI offers incredible functionality. The Solara Project uses agents to bypass the constraints of traditional software and standard components, allowing for the rapid and cost-effective development of new devices. Steve Bathiche, Corporate Vice President at Microsoft, explained that the goal is to design an ecosystem of devices that allows agents to operate seamlessly across various applications and services. The key to this vision is that the future of computing does not lie in a single device, but in a network of interconnected devices functioning as an integrated system.
