According to Mukund Jha, the company faces two significant threats that could influence its future. These concerns arise as Emergent celebrates an impressive milestone: reaching $100 million in annual recurring revenue (ARR) just eight months after its launch.

The Threats Identified by Mukund Jha

Mukund Jha recently shared his concerns with Business Insider regarding the future of vibe coding, a rapidly growing sector. He highlighted two main risks: the quality of the software produced and the potential replacement of applications by autonomous AI agents.

The Quality of Software

The first threat, according to Jha, lies in the quality of the software generated by AI-based coding tools. While these tools allow for rapid application creation, they often produce results that are buggy, fragile, or difficult to scale. Jha emphasizes that the vibe coding industry relies on the continuous improvement of these systems. He expressed hope that software quality would improve exponentially, stressing that the absence of such improvement would pose a major threat to the sector.

The Potential Impact of AI

The second threat identified by Jha is the possible evolution toward AI systems powerful enough to render the software building phase obsolete. He compared this potential transition to the evolution of phones, moving from Nokia models to BlackBerry, and then to the iPhone. In this analogy, current software could be likened to the BlackBerry, with a future where AI agents or large language models could perform tasks without the need for traditional applications.

Rapid Growth for Emergent

Despite these challenges, Emergent recently announced that it has reached an ARR of $100 million, an impressive achievement for such a young company. This rapid growth is illustrated by its doubling of ARR from $50 million to $100 million in just one month. This success reflects the swift rise of AI-based coding startups.

In January, Business Insider reported that Emergent raised $70 million in a Series B funding round, bringing its total funding to around $100 million. Notable investors include prestigious names such as Khosla Ventures, SoftBank Vision Fund 2, Lightspeed, Prosus, Together, Y Combinator, and the Google AI Futures Fund.

Other Market Players

Other companies in the sector are also experiencing rapid growth. Ryan Meadows, revenue director of Lovable, a Swedish vibe coding startup, indicated that their ARR increased by over 30% in one month, rising from $300 million to $400 million. This increase occurred after the launch of Claude Code, an AI coding tool developed by Anthropic. Meadows noted that rather than harming the company, many developers are using both products, illustrating a "rising tide" trend.

By the end of 2025, Cursor, another emerging company in the vibe coding field, announced that it had reached $1 billion in annualized revenue and was valued at nearly $30 billion.

Cost-Related Concerns

However, some industry leaders express concerns about the rising costs associated with AI-based coding tools. Chamath Palihapitiya, a billionaire investor, stated that his software company is reconsidering its use of Cursor due to increasing expenses related to AI development. He mentioned that costs have more than tripled since November.

AI companies acknowledge that more advanced features can lead to higher costs. Anthropic, for example, recently introduced Code Review, a tool designed to detect complex coding issues and identify bugs. The company clarified that this feature "optimizes for depth," making it "more expensive than lighter solutions like GitHub Claude Code."
