DoorDash and AI: Increased Productivity Without Staff Reductions

Tony Xu, the CEO of DoorDash, recently shared insights on the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the company's productivity during a results call on Wednesday. According to Xu, while AI has accelerated the development of the delivery app, it has not yet altered the workforce structure. DoorDash is currently focused on unifying its tech stack and ensuring that all employees can utilize AI.

Unlike other companies in the tech sector, Xu highlighted the productivity gains achieved through AI without resorting to layoffs. He revealed that more than half, even two-thirds, of DoorDash's code is now written by AI. However, he emphasized that these gains do not necessarily dictate a reorganization of teams or a reduction in employee numbers.

Strategic Priorities of DoorDash

Xu, who co-founded DoorDash in 2013, clarified that the company is still assessing how these productivity gains might influence team structures or employee counts. However, two major priorities are emphasized:

  • Ensuring that all teams use a unified tech stack.
  • Guaranteeing that all employees, not just engineers, are capable of using AI.

While DoorDash is able to deliver features and projects more quickly, Xu insisted that the ultimate goal is to provide better outcomes for customers. He added that customers hold the company to much higher standards.

A Different Approach in the Tech Sector

Xu's statements contrast with those of other tech leaders this year. Many companies boast about productivity gains related to AI, claiming that 50% to 90% of their code is generated by AI, and justify layoffs by these technological advancements.

In March, Atlassian announced the elimination of 1,600 jobs, or about 10% of its global workforce, citing AI as a factor in changing skill requirements. Similarly, Coinbase recently reduced its workforce by 14%, or about 700 workers, partly due to the impact of AI on work methods.

DoorDash, on the other hand, demonstrates that it is possible to integrate AI while maintaining its workforce, thus challenging the current trend in the sector.
