In a recent podcast, Rauch expressed his viewpoint by stating that in his current mental model, the individual contributor is actually the agent. This statement highlights a radical transformation in how companies envision their organizational structure in the age of AI agents.
A New Era of Management
With the advent of AI agents, companies are beginning to reorganize their structures to integrate these new digital workers. Some experts suggest that every human employee could become a manager in this new paradigm. Guillermo Rauch goes further by asserting that this evolution is turning us all into CEOs.
Ali Rhode, managing partner at Outset Capital, interviewed Rauch on his podcast "10 Minutes or Less," which focuses on short interviews. Rhode asked Rauch if he regretted being an individual contributor, meaning an employee without management responsibilities. Rauch answered negatively, clarifying that this role is likely destined to disappear.
Skills and AI Agents
For those who specialize in a unique skill, Rauch announced some unwelcome news: an AI agent could surpass these skills. AI agents are becoming more efficient every day, particularly in the field of software engineering, where tools like Claude Code and OpenClaw have caused significant changes.
Rauch describes this period as the era of "leverage." He questions the relevance of continuing to write lines of code when AI agents can accomplish these tasks with agentic leverage. "We are all a bit like mini CEOs at this point," he added, emphasizing the transformation of traditional roles.
AI Agents in the Organization
The management of AI agents is on the rise. Rather than overseeing human teams, some companies are now choosing to hire managers to oversee collections of bots. This evolution is already disrupting traditional organizational charts and altering the role of middle managers.
The example of Vercel is telling: the company has reduced its sales team from ten people to just one, tasked with managing a bot. This decision illustrates how AI agents can replace traditional positions, redefining staffing needs.
Ali Rhode asked Rauch if this meant the end of individual contributors. "No one is an IC anymore," Rauch replied, confirming the ongoing transformation.
