The U.S. Department of Defense recently announced that it has reached agreements with several tech giants for the use of their artificial intelligence tools in classified contexts. Among the companies involved are OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Nvidia, Elon Musk's xAI, and the startup Reflection. These partnerships aim to integrate AI legally and operationally within the U.S. armed forces.
However, a major player in AI, Anthropic, has been excluded from these agreements. Although Anthropic had previously collaborated with the Pentagon under a $200 million contract for managing classified information, differences emerged. The company refused to change its stance on domestic mass surveillance and the use of fully autonomous weapons, leading to its exclusion from federal projects. In response, Anthropic has filed a lawsuit against the federal government and obtained a temporary injunction.
Despite this exclusion, Anthropic's security model, named Mythos, is recognized for its exceptional capabilities in detecting and correcting cybersecurity vulnerabilities. Emil Michael, the Chief Technology Officer of the Department of Defense, emphasized the importance of this model for national security while maintaining that Anthropic poses a risk to the supply chain.
The agreements with OpenAI, Google, and the other companies aim to establish an AI-oriented U.S. military, thereby enhancing the country's defense capabilities. These partnerships continue the existing relationships with some of these companies, such as Microsoft and Amazon, which have close ties to the Pentagon.
