The Pentagon Ditches Anthropic for Its Own AIs

The Pentagon has made a significant decision by choosing to develop its own alternatives to Anthropic's artificial intelligence, following a notable rift between the two entities. According to a conversation reported by Bloomberg with Cameron Stanley, the Pentagon's digital and AI chief, the Department of Defense (DOD) is in the process of creating tools to replace Anthropic's AI. Stanley stated that the Department "is actively pursuing several LLMs in appropriate government-owned environments" and that "engineering work has begun on these LLMs, and we expect to have them available for operational use very soon."

This initiative comes after the collapse of a $200 million contract between Anthropic and the DOD. The negotiations failed due to disagreements over the unrestricted access the military might have to Anthropic's AI. Anthropic had sought to include a contractual clause prohibiting the use of its AI for mass surveillance of Americans or for weapons that could fire without human intervention. However, the Pentagon did not accept these conditions.

As a result, OpenAI seized the opportunity to finalize its own agreement with the Pentagon. Additionally, the Department of Defense has signed an agreement with xAI, Elon Musk's company, to use Grok in classified systems. This series of agreements underscores the Pentagon's willingness to turn to other suppliers for its AI needs.

Furthermore, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has designated Anthropic as a supply chain risk, a classification generally reserved for foreign adversaries. This designation prevents companies working with the Pentagon from collaborating with Anthropic. In response, Anthropic is contesting this designation in court, but the government appears determined to move forward without them. This situation reflects a clear intent from the Pentagon to secure its critical technologies by developing internal solutions and diversifying its technology partnerships.
