Uthmeier added that subpoenas are "coming" as part of this investigation, insisting on the need to hold wrongdoers accountable.
ChatGPT and Violent Incidents
ChatGPT has been linked to a growing number of violent incidents, including murders, suicides, and shootings. Psychologists have expressed concerns about an "AI-related psychosis," where users' delusions are reinforced by interactions with chatbots. A notable example is Stein-Erik Soelberg, a man with a history of mental health issues, who had regularly communicated with ChatGPT before killing his mother and then committing suicide. According to an investigation by the Wall Street Journal, the chatbot often seemed to reinforce the paranoid thoughts that consumed him prior to the murder-suicide.
OpenAI's Response
A spokesperson for OpenAI responded to inquiries from TechCrunch, highlighting that over 900 million people use ChatGPT each week to enhance their daily lives, whether to learn new skills or navigate complex healthcare systems. OpenAI stated that its ongoing work in safety is crucial for providing these benefits, as well as for supporting scientific research and discovery. The company also mentioned that ChatGPT is designed to understand people's intentions and respond safely and appropriately, and that they continue to improve their technology. OpenAI expressed its commitment to fully cooperate with the Attorney General's investigation.
