In response to the growing demand for labor to construct data centers dedicated to artificial intelligence, developers are turning to innovative temporary housing solutions. These facilities, known as man camps, are designed to accommodate the numerous workers needed for these large-scale projects.
Historically used to house workers in remote oil fields, these camps now provide a practical solution for data center workers. For instance, in Dickens County, Texas, a former Bitcoin mining facility is being transformed into a 1.6 gigawatt data center. Workers will live in housing units equipped with various amenities such as a gym, laundry facilities, game rooms, and a cafeteria offering made-to-order steaks.
A Strategic Investment for Target Hospitality
The company Target Hospitality has signed contracts totaling $132 million for the construction and operation of this camp in Dickens County. This site could potentially accommodate over 1,000 workers. According to Troy Schrenk, Target's Chief Commercial Officer, the development of data centers in the United States represents "the largest pipeline of activity" he has ever seen.
Target Hospitality is no stranger to managing large facilities. It also operates the Dilley Family Detention Center in Texas, which houses families apprehended by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. However, this center has faced criticism, with court documents revealing that the food contained worms and mold, and that children suffered due to a lack of accommodations for allergies and special diets.
