Mustafa Suleyman of Microsoft Clarifies His Statements on AI
Mustafa Suleyman, head of artificial intelligence at Microsoft, recently clarified his statements regarding the impact of AI on office jobs. During an appearance on the Decoder show on Monday, he specified that AI is designed to assist workers in their tasks rather than completely replace them.
Suleyman explained that tasks such as sending emails, communicating with colleagues, or preparing PowerPoint presentations will increasingly be automated. However, he emphasized that this does not necessarily mean the disappearance of professional roles. According to him, AI will enable these tasks to be completed more quickly and efficiently, thereby alleviating repetitive and time-consuming work.
A Vision of AI as a Tool for Efficiency
In a report from the Financial Times published in February, Suleyman had initially claimed that most office tasks would be fully automated by AI within 12 to 18 months. This statement raised concerns about job security in sectors such as law, accounting, and project management.
During his appearance on Decoder, Suleyman made a point to clarify the distinction between tasks and jobs. He insisted that his comments were about specific tasks and not jobs as a whole. "Jobs and roles are broader categories, while tasks are components of those roles," he explained, thus highlighting the importance of not conflating the two concepts.
