AI, a Strategic Lever for Walmart
Seth Dallaire, head of growth at Walmart, highlights the significant impact of artificial intelligence on the company's advertising strategy. According to him, AI offers a unique opportunity to rethink how advertisements are integrated into the customer shopping journey. Advertisements, already ubiquitous on traditional search engines, are beginning to infiltrate AI platforms. For Walmart, learning about consumer interactions with chatbots has become a valuable source of data. This approach allows for the creation of more relevant and less intrusive advertisements, thereby enhancing the shopping experience.
Sparky, the Experimental Shopping Assistant
Since last fall, Walmart has been testing the integration of advertisements into its AI-powered shopping assistant, named Sparky. While sponsored listings are present, their frequency is significantly lower than that of traditional search results. Dallaire emphasizes the importance of closely monitoring how customers use these tools to ensure that the experience remains contextually relevant and non-intrusive. At the Evercore ISI Consumer and Retail conference, Dallaire stated that advertising and retail media play a crucial role in assisting customers with their purchases. He also noted that Walmart's advertising business has become a significant revenue source, with a 46% increase in revenue last year, reaching $6.4 billion.
A Customer-Centric Approach
In addition to overseeing advertising, Dallaire is also responsible for the growth of Walmart's online marketplace and the Walmart Plus membership program. He insists that advertisements should not only drive merchandise sales but also enrich the member experience. Dallaire emphasized that advertising can introduce new products to consumers, playing a role similar to merchandising. He noted that customer queries via Sparky are often more detailed, allowing Walmart to better understand their needs without making risky assumptions.
For example, a customer might ask Sparky for a laundry detergent suitable for allergies, a more specific request than in the past. These richer interactions enable Walmart to deliver more relevant advertisements and avoid inappropriate recommendations. Dallaire also mentioned that if advertisements overwhelm a customer and lead them to abandon their cart without making a purchase, that approach is not effective. Furthermore, he stated that Walmart benefits more from learning how people interact with its shopping assistant Sparky than from the advertisements included in the chatbot. Dallaire clarified that the types of queries received from customers in these agentic environments differ significantly from what Walmart has historically observed.
In conclusion, Dallaire asserts that if customers embrace this new way of shopping, Walmart must adapt to meet these expectations.
