Designing an Agentic AI: Thinking Like a Manager, a Crucial Challenge
For designers involved in creating an agentic AI, the challenge goes beyond traditional design frameworks. Indeed, it requires adopting a managerial approach to successfully develop these intelligent systems.
Unlike classic AI projects, where the interface is often the focal point, agentic AI necessitates deep reflection on the management of the decisions that the agent can make autonomously. Designers must ask themselves three essential questions: what actions should the agent perform, what decisions can it make on its own, and when should it seek the user's input?
Karen, a senior UX designer, shared her experience in designing an agentic AI. She explained that clients wanted to use their product to quickly obtain salary ranges from job descriptions, incorporating data such as location and years of experience. Previously, users relied on ChatGPT to get this information. The challenge for Karen was to enable the agent to provide these answers instantly within their product.
This shift towards an agentic approach required rethinking the role of AI, not just as a response tool, but as a manager capable of making informed decisions while consulting the user when necessary.
