Cloudflare Disrupts the Tech Sector with Massive Layoffs

Cloudflare, a crucial pillar of the global web, recently announced a decision that could redefine the contours of the technology industry. The company has decided to eliminate over 1,100 positions, representing about 20% of its global workforce. This announcement, made on May 7, was accompanied by the release of impressive financial results for the first quarter. Revenue reached $639.8 million, marking a significant 34% increase compared to the previous year. Additionally, adjusted earnings per share rose to 25 cents, exceeding market expectations by two cents.

In a context where contracts exceeding $5 million per year have increased by 50%, Cloudflare has chosen to highlight agentic AI as the main driver of this restructuring. CEO Matthew Prince, in a post co-signed with co-founder Michelle Zatlyn, explained that these layoffs are neither the result of budget cuts nor poor performance. According to them, the goal is to reinvent the company's operations in the age of AI, where employees using internal AI tools are found to be two to one hundred times more productive.

Unprecedented Transparency in the Industry

Unlike other tech giants such as Meta and Oracle, which have recently conducted layoffs without mentioning AI, Cloudflare has chosen not to hide this reality. At Meta, for example, HR head Janelle Gale specified that AI was not among the official reasons for the 8,000 layoffs in April. Oracle, for its part, did not even mention the term in its internal communications. Cloudflare, on the other hand, has made AI the primary reason for these layoffs, openly and straightforwardly acknowledging it.

The use of AI within Cloudflare has increased sixfold in just three months. Although the exact details of this increase remain unclear, this figure put forth by Prince himself indicates a rapid and profound transformation. However, despite solid fundamentals, the announcement led to a 24% drop in stock price the following day, reflecting some concern about the future implications of AI on employment.

Consequences and Legal Framework in Europe

The job cuts announced by Cloudflare affect all teams and regions, including Europe, where the company has offices in Lisbon, London, Munich, and Paris. CFO Thomas Seifert clarified that these cuts would not affect quota-carrying salespeople. In Europe, the platform workers directive, adopted at the end of 2024, mandates human oversight of algorithmic decisions regarding working conditions. In France, a collective dismissal of more than ten people within thirty days requires information and consultation with the CSE.

Cloudflare's restructuring charges are estimated to be between $140 million and $150 million, according to the SEC filing. Affected employees will retain their base salary until the end of 2026, a package significantly more generous than the industry average. Since January, between 120,000 and 150,000 job cuts have been recorded in the global tech sector. Meanwhile, massive investments in AI, totaling $725 billion by 2026, have been announced by giants like Amazon, Microsoft, Alphabet, and Meta. Cloudflare has thus highlighted a trend that many feared: AI is increasingly replacing human jobs.
