AI chatbots are experiencing impressive traffic growth, seven times faster than that of social media, according to a study by Similarweb. However, despite this rapid progression, the total traffic volume of AI chatbots remains four times lower than that of social media.
User Profile and Device Usage
Users of AI chatbots and social media exhibit similar profiles in terms of gender and age, with a peak usage in the 25-34 age range. Nevertheless, AI chatbot users tend to be slightly older. A notable distinction lies in device usage: 72% of AI chatbot traffic comes from desktop, suggesting a focus primarily on work and productivity, in contrast to social media, which sees an almost equal distribution between desktop and mobile.
Social media users also spend more time per session, while AI chatbot users prefer shorter sessions, often oriented towards specific tasks.
Differences in Traffic Sources
Regarding traffic sources, AI chatbots heavily rely on direct traffic, with 73% of their users accessing services directly. In comparison, social media attracts 50% of its traffic directly and benefits more from organic search. This difference can be attributed to the fact that social media content is often indexed and appears in search results, unlike AI chatbots, which do not produce easily searchable content.
