The startup founded in 2024 by Mehul Trivedi and Steve Romine is selling AI-powered hearing assistance glasses. Backed by $12 million raised recently, Legato targets moderate hearing loss with a Bluetooth-compatible product that is eligible for vision insurance in the United States.
Funding, Founder Background, and Insurance Access
The commercial launch comes just weeks after Legato raised $12 million from Neotribe Ventures, Listen, and Village Global. Founded in 2024 by Mehul Trivedi and Steve Romine, the startup benefits from their experience at Bose, where Trivedi led the creation of Bose Frames and Romine headed the hearing aids division. After their time at Bose, Trivedi joined EssilorLuxottica to lead smart glasses projects and worked on the Meta Ray-Ban, while Romine became COO of Audicus. The two founders then combined their expertise to explore the convergence of hearing technology and smart glasses. In the United States, the Legato Frames are eligible for vision insurance coverage and are available on the startup's website as well as through select eye care professionals.
Onboard Processing, Voice Separation AI, and Limited Leakage
The device relies on an artificial intelligence system capable of distinguishing voices from background noise, amplifying speech, and reducing unwanted sounds. The open-ear frames do not broadcast sound to those around the wearer. A dual speaker directs audio towards the wearer and minimizes leakage, with a reported 99% reduction in noise just a few centimeters from the ear. According to Legato, all processing is done locally on the glasses, without cameras or recordings. The patented hearing assistance technology is integrated into the arms of the frames.
Pricing, Battery Life, Styles, and Target Use
The Legato Frames are priced starting at $999. They offer a reported battery life of 10 to 12 hours and weigh 34 grams with the lenses. Three models are available, compatible with both prescription lenses and Bluetooth streaming for listening to music or making calls. This device targets adults with hearing loss up to a moderate level. The glasses are now on the market, with Legato emphasizing an approach focused on accessibility to hearing care, addressing barriers related to price, comfort, and the stigma of traditional hearing solutions.
