The online encyclopedia Wikipedia, known for its rigor and reliability, is facing the rise of AI-generated texts. Reasons for Rejection
Wikipedia emphasizes several reasons for limiting the use of AI in writing its articles. The first is source reliability: information must be verifiable and come from recognized sources. AI-generated texts often lack rigor and precision, thereby compromising the quality of information.
Next, neutrality is crucial. Articles must maintain an impartial point of view, but AI systems, influenced by the data on which they are trained, can reproduce biases.
Verifiability is also a cornerstone of Wikipedia. Contributions must be based on accessible and verifiable sources, which is not always the case with AI texts, as they may fail to cite appropriate sources.
Furthermore, the platform values human contributions. Wikipedia relies on the collaborative work of volunteers, and excessive use of AI could diminish contributor engagement.
The quality of content is another concern. AI-generated articles may lack the nuance and depth essential for maintaining the encyclopedia's standard of excellence.
Finally, the risks of plagiarism are very real. AI systems can produce content that closely resembles existing works, thus posing copyright issues.
Tolerated Exceptions
Despite these reservations, Wikipedia allows the use of AI in two specific cases. AI can serve as writing assistance, helping writers formulate ideas or structure articles. Additionally, AI can be used for creating templates or article structures, provided that these templates are reviewed and completed by human contributors. This approach allows for leveraging the benefits of AI while preserving the integrity and quality of the content.
