Apple is preparing AI camera AirPods for 2026

Apple is about to reach a new milestone in technological innovation with its AirPods equipped with cameras, according to Mark Gurman from Bloomberg. These new devices are currently in the design validation phase, a key step before production validation, and prototypes are already being tested internally.

Contrary to expectations, the integrated cameras will not be used to capture photos or videos. Their main function will be to collect low-resolution visual information, which users can leverage through the voice assistant Siri. For example, it will be possible to request recipe suggestions based on available ingredients or receive detailed directions for navigation.

These AirPods, which will draw inspiration from the design of the AirPods Pro 3, will feature longer stems to accommodate the camera technology. A small LED will indicate when visual data is being transmitted to the cloud. Initially slated for the first half of 2026, the launch has been delayed due to the update of Siri. However, Gurman reports that this update should be ready by September, potentially coinciding with the launch of the new AirPods.

Apple's initiative to equip its gadgets with AI features places it in direct competition with Meta, which has already successfully launched smart glasses, and could also give it an edge over OpenAI, which is currently developing a phone. Meanwhile, Apple is working on other innovative projects, such as smart glasses and an AI pendant, with a launch anticipated for early 2027.
