OpenAI Revolutionizes Codex on Mac with Appshots
OpenAI has recently unveiled a new feature for its coding assistant Codex, called Appshots, which promises to transform the user experience on Mac. With this innovation, users can now send the content of any application window directly to Codex by simply pressing the two Command keys. This action allows Codex to receive not only a screenshot but also the complete text of the window, including parts that are not visible on the screen.
This advancement is particularly useful for developers working with API documents, emails, design drafts, or error messages. Instead of manually copying information or painstakingly describing the content, they can now transmit this data directly to Codex, thereby simplifying the coding process.
However, there are limitations to note. For certain services like Google Docs or Gmail, Codex may sometimes only capture the visible part of the screen. Additionally, using Appshots requires specific permissions on macOS, particularly for screen recording and accessibility features.
Appshots is available on Mac for all Codex usage plans and complements the Computer Use feature introduced last April. Unlike the latter, Appshots is not subject to the regional restrictions affecting the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland.
