Massive Opposition to Data Centers

A recent survey conducted by Gallup highlights significant opposition among Americans towards data centers, with 71% of respondents stating they do not want such facilities near their homes. This figure even surpasses the opposition to nuclear reactors, which stands at 53%.

Preferences and Perceptions

It is surprising to note that more people prefer to live near a nuclear reactor than a data center. Among those who oppose these centers, 48% express strong opposition. This trend is evident across the political spectrum, although Democrats are more likely to express strong opposition.

Opposition by Political Affiliation

The survey, conducted in March, shows that 56% of Democrats are strongly opposed to the construction of local data centers, compared to 39% of Republicans and 48% of independents. Additionally, more than a quarter of Republicans and independents describe themselves as somewhat opposed, compared to 19% of Democrats.

Environmental Concerns

Environmental concerns dominate the reasons for this opposition. Approximately 46% of respondents express significant worry about the environmental impact of data centers. Among the opponents, 50% cite the impact on natural resources as their primary reason for opposition, with 18% specifically mentioning excessive water and energy usage.

Nearly a quarter of opponents are also concerned about the impact on quality of life, particularly due to rising property values. Furthermore, 20% of respondents fear an increase in costs, including higher electricity bills.

Anti-Technology Sentiment

Although anti-AI sentiment is less pronounced, it still plays a role in the opposition. About 10% of opponents state they do not appreciate technology, and 4% claim they do not trust it.
