The creation of religious content is undergoing a major transformation thanks to artificial intelligence. On platforms like Fiverr, freelancers from around the world, particularly in Africa and South Asia, are responding to a growing demand for AI-generated biblical videos. These videos, often shared on TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook, captivate a wide audience despite sometimes inconsistent aesthetics and mechanical narrative voices.
Fiverr, which has committed to becoming an "AI-first" company after laying off 250 employees, has become a hub for these creators. Freelancers showcase their ability to quickly produce visually inspired biblical content, often dramatic and emotional, at reduced costs. Independent workers like Dave from Nigeria and Sherry from Pakistan use tools like ChatGPT, Grok, and Leonardo AI to create these visual narratives.
Dave, with a background in web development and UI/UX design, has found in AI an opportunity to venture into video production without the constraints of learning traditional animation. "I saw an opportunity in using AI tools because learning traditional animation would have taken too long, and the resources weren't really there for me," explains Dave. He has been able to experiment and discover things along the way, turning his newly acquired skills into income through Fiverr.
Sherry, on the other hand, highlights her skills in prompt writing and visual composition to stand out on Fiverr. She claims that this work requires particular expertise, especially in storytelling, timing, and visual composition, which allows for the production of more polished and engaging videos. "I manage the entire process, from the idea to the final edit, which saves clients time and ensures that the content is professional, unique, and aligned with their goals," she specifies.
The produced videos, although often criticized for their visual quality, attract a loyal audience. Brands like AI Bible are taking advantage of this affordable labor to monetize their online content. Viewers, far from seeing these videos as sacrilegious, often welcome them with humor and interest, thereby enhancing engagement around these channels.
The process of creating these videos is well-established. Ruaf, a Pakistani freelancer, describes how he uses ChatGPT to develop scripts based on biblical dialogues, which he then transforms into audio narrations with ElevenLabs. The scenes are visually generated with Grok and edited on CapCut, illustrating an optimized production chain to meet the growing demand.
Ruaf explains that many other freelancers use similar workflows for their projects. Members of the AI community often share tips on how to overcome obstacles like generation limits imposed by different platforms. However, the visual uniformity of the videos is often the result of creators adopting similar methods.
Despite criticisms regarding the uniformity and quality of the videos, creators continue to thrive, motivated by the economic opportunities offered by this new wave of digital religious content. Freelancers emphasize that this work, while perceived as less extractive, allows them to turn their skills into income while addressing a rapidly expanding niche. The comment sections of the videos are filled with viewers claiming that "Jesus would also laugh at these videos," and praising the channels for spreading the message of Christ.
