The United Arab Emirates is embarking on an unprecedented government reorganization in the field of artificial intelligence. The country anticipates that within two years, half of the sectors, services, and government processes will be managed by autonomous AI systems. This announcement was made by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum on the X platform.
With this initiative, the UAE aims to become the world's first government to adopt autonomous AI on such a scale. The goal is to make AI an "executive partner" capable of enhancing public services, accelerating decision-making, and increasing overall efficiency. To achieve this, every federal employee will be trained to work in collaboration with these AI systems.
The Challenges and Risks Associated with Autonomous AI
While promising, the use of autonomous AI in government management is not without risks. These systems, which make decisions independently, can make mistakes and amplify biases present in their training data. These concerns are particularly significant in a country where democratic checks are limited and press freedom is restricted.
Concerns about the use of AI by governments are not exclusive to the UAE. In the United States, for example, Anthropic, the creator of Claude, has expressed fears about potential mass surveillance facilitated by AI. This situation highlights the global challenges associated with integrating AI into governmental structures.
