An executive from Nvidia recently highlighted a concerning trend: the costs associated with computing for artificial intelligence now exceed employee salaries. This statement echoes that of the CEO of Mercor, who revealed that the startup allocates more financial resources to tokens for its internal agents than to its staff.
AI Spending: A Matter of Perspective
Despite these observations, a study from the Ramp AI Index indicates that American companies are not yet spending more on AI than on human resources. The companies most engaged in AI, referred to as "AI-plundered," invest $7,500 per employee each month. This figure, while high, is still lower than the $16,000 per month that a software engineer earns on average.
Growing AI Expenditures
AI-intensive companies, representing the top 1%, show a monthly spending per employee of $7,500, while the top 10% spend about $611. The median company, on the other hand, allocates only about $11.38 per employee, which is the cost of a seat on a corporate plan.
A Trend to Watch
Despite budgetary pressures, AI spending continues to rise. Companies labeled as AI-plundered have seen their expenditures grow by 14.1% per employee last month. It remains to be seen whether this trend will persist as these companies navigate various models and platforms to optimize their costs, particularly by utilizing more affordable open-source models.
