Pit: A New Rising Star in the AI Startup Universe in Stockholm

The Swedish startup Pit has recently captured public attention with its bold social media posts. However, beyond this communication strategy, Pit is establishing itself as a promising company in the field of artificial intelligence in Stockholm, a thriving ecosystem.

Experienced Founders and Strong Financial Backing

Pit is led by the co-founders of Voi, the European electric scooter giant. Among them is Fredrik Hjelm, who has surrounded himself with former engineers from renowned companies like iZettle and Klarna. This team is now backed by financial support from a16z, which led a funding round of $16 million. Stockholm, which is also home to the startup Lovable, has become a hunting ground for a16z in search of the next European unicorn.

An Innovative Approach to AI for Businesses

Under the leadership of Adam Jafer, CEO of Pit, the company focuses on developing AI solutions for businesses. These solutions are designed to learn from customers and create custom software, thereby automating internal processes. Jafer, who left Voi after seven years, saw the evolution of AI as an opportunity to replace SaaS tools with more efficient internal applications.

Jafer departed from Voi last summer after a seven-year tenure during which the company grew to nearly 1,000 employees operating in 13 countries. From his perspective as an engineer, Jafer observed that AI had matured enough to be utilized by businesses. Initially, he saw an opportunity to replace inexpensive SaaS tools with internal applications, but he quickly envisioned an opportunity beyond Voi.

A Competitive Market and Differentiated Solutions

Pit stands out in a saturated market with two flagship products: Pit Studio and Pit Cloud. Pit Studio allows employees to guide the AI-driven automation process, while Pit Cloud offers solutions that comply with corporate governance and audit requirements. Since January, Pit has been testing its solutions with pilot clients across various sectors, focusing on automating back-office functions.

The telecommunications, healthcare, logistics, and other sectors are mentioned as testing grounds for pilot clients. “Nothing customer-facing, no conversational AI, just back-office, service, and support functions that we are transforming into automations so you can give time back to people to focus on your core business,” Jafer stated.

Expansion and Strategic Recruitment

To support its expansion, Pit is recruiting specialized engineers to integrate its solutions into client companies. The goal is to meet the productivity and efficiency expectations of large accounts. Jafer emphasizes that Pit is not looking to reduce headcount but rather to free employees from repetitive tasks so they can focus on higher-value missions.

Jafer clarified that success indicators go beyond time and cost savings, including improvements in work quality and reductions in human error.

Controversies and Diversity Within the Team

Pit sparked debates when Jafer stated on LinkedIn that the company does not employ junior engineers, as tasks are now performed by AI agents. Although this post remains visible, Jafer has nuanced his remarks by highlighting the importance of a balanced mix of skills. Additionally, the predominantly male composition of the team has faced criticism, although Hjelm has pointed out the presence of women on the team.

An Entrepreneurial Adventure Among Friends

The founders of Pit, who have previously collaborated at Voi, are embarking on this new adventure together. Among them are Filip Lindvall and Andreas Hjelm, brother of Fredrik Hjelm. Although the latter remains at the helm of Voi, his network and experience are valuable assets for Pit.

Transatlantic Funding and a Promising Future

Pit’s funding round was led by Alex Rampell and Gabriel Vasquez from a16z, with support from Lakestar and Nordic investors. This fundraising reflects the growing interest in AI in Europe, with Stockholm establishing itself as a dynamic tech hub. Pit, with its flexible and agnostic approach, is well-positioned to capitalize on these trends, particularly in European industrial sectors.

Hjelm explained how a16z partners Alex Rampell and Gabriel Vasquez ended up leading Pit's funding round. He met Ben Horowitz, Gabriel Vasquez, and Jen Kha “a few years ago when they came to Stockholm to understand what they could do for European technology. We stayed in touch. When it came to choosing partners for Pit, we didn’t need money to get started, but we wanted the best investors we could find. So, we chose them, and they chose us.”

Jafer also confirmed that Pit did not spend much time with other companies to raise its round, which was also supported by Pit's founders themselves, as well as Lakestar, leaders from American tech companies, and wealthy families from Nordic countries. This transatlantic funding picture confirms the growing interest in AI coming from Stockholm, which has solidified as one of Europe’s most active startup hubs. Pit could also benefit from its European sales DNA. “We are targeting industrials, and there are many in Europe,” Jafer stated. He also reported that clients appreciate Pit's agnostic approach. Since it can use different AI and cloud providers based on client preferences, it could benefit from the current favorable winds for sovereign technology, particularly in critical sectors.
