AI as a Revealer of Debugging Gaps
The rise of artificial intelligence tools has highlighted an unexpected problem: many developers struggle to debug their own code. This difficulty is partially true, but it is widespread enough to be noteworthy.
The Role of Claude Code in Debugging
To illustrate this phenomenon, a developer intentionally introduced five bugs into a production polling application. By using Claude Code (Opus 4.7), he demonstrated how precise descriptions of symptoms allow the AI agent to follow the data flow and identify the root causes of the issues.
The identified bugs included missing database updates, duplicate real-time subscriptions, division by zero errors, key mismatches in localStorage, and issues with async/await that prevented correct updates after deletion.
The Limitations of AI Agents
The experiment showed that while AI agents like Claude Code can accelerate the debugging process, they do not replace human skills. They highlight the gaps in developers' abilities, particularly their capacity to isolate symptoms and guide the agent to the correct segment of code.
Thus, skilled engineers see their efficiency increased, while those with less experience feel the gap between their skills and the demands of modern debugging more acutely.
