Yann LeCun, recipient of the prestigious Turing Award and former chief scientist of artificial intelligence at Meta, has successfully raised over $1 billion for his new company, Advanced Machine Intelligence Labs (AMI Labs). This funding round marks the largest ever recorded for a startup in its early stages in Europe. Notable investors include Nvidia, Bezos Expeditions, the Singaporean fund Temasek, and the French fund Cathay Innovation.
Impressive Valuation and an International Team
Even before this funding round, AMI Labs was already valued at $3.5 billion. The company is led by Alexandre LeBrun, former head of the French startup Nabla, who serves as CEO. Yann LeCun, for his part, chairs the board of directors. The initial team at AMI Labs consists of about a dozen employees spread across strategic cities such as Paris, New York, Singapore, and Montreal.
A Bold Vision for the Future of AI
AMI Labs aims to develop artificial intelligence models capable of understanding the physical environment, a crucial skill for applications in sectors such as robotics and transportation. According to Yann LeCun and Alexandre LeBrun, current language models are insufficient to achieve these ambitious goals. Although Meta is not directly involved as an investor, a partnership with AMI Labs is being considered, which could enhance the startup's research and development capabilities.
