Mozilla has recently collaborated with the AI Mythos from Anthropic to enhance the security of its Firefox browser. This partnership has led to the discovery and correction of 271 vulnerabilities in version 150 of Firefox. This advancement could mark a turning point in the fight against zero-day attacks.

Behind the seemingly innocuous updates of Firefox 150 lies a major breakthrough for cybersecurity. By teaming up with Anthropic's new AI, Mozilla was able to identify and fix nearly 300 flaws in one go. This breakthrough could shift the balance of power between hackers and defenders.

The Impact of Mythos on Vulnerability Detection

In a blog post, Bobby Holley, a member of the Firefox development team, detailed this collaboration with Anthropic. With exclusive access to Mythos, Mozilla was able to identify 271 vulnerabilities, all of which were fixed in Firefox 150. This is twelve times more than during a previous collaboration with another model, Opus 4.6, which had addressed 22 breaches. Holley claims that this efficiency could render zero-day attacks obsolete, as these vulnerabilities are exploited by hackers before the software vendor is even aware of them.

This restriction is due to the sensitivity of the technology, which could be misused if it fell into the wrong hands. Mozilla views this advancement as a chance to overturn the historical advantage of attackers. Holley concludes on an optimistic note: while all 271 flaws could have been discovered by an expert, AI allows for more efficient identification, which could transform cybersecurity.
