Google recently announced a major update to its AI search features, aimed at integrating insights from platforms like Reddit and other online forums. This initiative is designed to make searches more relevant by connecting users to discussions and advice from firsthand sources.
One of the most notable changes is the introduction of a "perspectives overview" that comes from firsthand sources such as social media, Reddit, and other online forums. This effectively links users' search queries to online conversations on similar topics. Google claims that this update responds to a growing trend where internet users seek advice directly from other people. This resonates with anyone who has ever added "Reddit" to the end of their Google search terms to find experiences from real people rather than web results optimized for SEO.
This approach also supports the claims of Reddit CEO Steve Huffman, who stated last year that "virtually everyone using Google at this point will eventually find themselves on Reddit." By integrating these features into its AI search tools, Google aims to encourage more users to try them out instead of manually sifting through traditional web results.
Google is also adding extra context to these new AI response links, such as the creator's name, their ID, or the name of the community, to make these conversational sources easier to identify quickly. These firsthand sources are presented as "Expert Tips" in AI-powered search results and can guide users to specialized forums and subreddits they might want to explore further.
Another update will display sources for related topics alongside AI search results, aiming to encourage users to delve deeper into subjects. For example, if you search for how to take stunning photos of the Northern Lights, you might see quotes from a photography forum advising on exposure time, accompanied by clickable links – showcasing the name of the specific community – so you can access the full conversation.
Google is also adding more links to useful websites next to relevant text in AI responses. These links are intended to be related to the user's query but not necessarily to the answer they are seeking, such as linking users to blogs about travel guides and workout suggestions when they search for information on cycling routes. Another change adds suggestions for related topics at the end of AI responses to encourage users to explore further the subject they are researching. For instance, if users search for how cities are expanding green spaces, Google can now also display recommended reports and case studies on successful efforts in major cities alongside the summary of results.
Finally, Google is also making it easier to find specific sources with a new feature that highlights links from your news subscriptions in AI mode and AI previews, at least for publishers that support subscription linking. This means that your trusted information sources should stand out more in the flow of information.
