During its Google Cloud Next conference, Google unveiled a series of updates for Workspace, including the addition of the AI Overviews feature to Gmail. This innovation, already used to summarize Google search results, is now being extended to professional Gmail users.
With this feature, users can ask questions in natural language and receive concise answers without having to open each email individually. Google notes that this feature is particularly useful for addressing common topics in professional emails, such as performance improvements, project milestones, invoices, feedback on presentations, and travel details.
The AI Overview generates an instant summary from multiple emails and conversations. While AI is not everyone's preferred method for obtaining answers, it is quickly becoming a standard, both in Google's products and on the web in general.
To enable this feature, the organization must have activated Gemini for Workspace in Gmail, as well as access to Workspace Intelligence. End users must also enable smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet, as well as in Google Workspace.
This feature, previously reserved for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, will now be accessible to professional, enterprise, and educational customers. The relevant subscriptions include:
- Business: Business Starter, Standard, and Plus
- Enterprise: Enterprise Starter, Standard, and Plus
- Consumers: Google AI Pro and Ultra
- Other Editions: Frontline Plus
- AI Add-ons: Google AI Pro for Education
In parallel, Google announced that AI Overviews in Drive will be widely available for eligible Workspace and Google AI plans after a beta phase.
