Artificial intelligence startups have seen their revenues reach an impressive total of $80 billion, with Anthropic and OpenAI capturing 89% of that amount alone. This dominance is highlighted by a recent analysis from The Information, which underscores the rise of these two major players in the industry.
Explosive Growth
In just six months, the revenues of AI startups have increased by 112%, reaching nearly $80 billion. A group of 34 AI startups is responsible for this figure, although some of these numbers may be inflated. Anthropic has recently taken the lead in terms of revenue, surpassing OpenAI thanks to its AI-based coding tools, which have seen notable success.
Revenue Sharing and High Costs
Despite these impressive figures, a portion of Anthropic's revenue is shared with giants like Amazon and Google. On its part, OpenAI pays 20% of its revenue to Microsoft, a deal that extends until 2030. Meanwhile, both companies spend over $30 billion annually, primarily on training costs, highlighting the financial challenges they face.
Beyond the Leaders
In addition to Anthropic and OpenAI, other startups like Perplexity, ElevenLabs, and Cognition have also crossed the $500 million revenue mark. However, the majority of the value in the AI sector appears to be concentrated among model creators, a trend confirmed by investors such as Sequoia.
