Lio Raises $30 Million to Automate Procurement

Lio, an innovative startup in the procurement space, has recently raised $30 million in a Series A funding round led by Andreessen Horowitz. This round also saw participation from SV Angels, Harry Stebbings, and YC, bringing Lio's total funds raised to $33 million. Lio was part of YC's Spring '23 batch. This funding aims to expand the company across the United States and enhance the capabilities of its AI agents.

A Solution to Fragmented Processes

The co-founders of Lio, including CEO Vladimir Keil, identified procurement challenges during their previous professional experiences. Keil encountered these issues while working at a large corporation and again while building his first startup. He found that, despite modern software, the process remained largely manual and inefficient. In response, Lio developed a platform of AI agents capable of automating these repetitive and fragmented tasks.

Keil explains that procurement is often a bottleneck for companies, requiring the opening of enterprise resource planning (ERP) software, checking contract management systems, searching supplier databases, and much more. Even with modern eProcurement software, most of the actual work is still done manually, resulting in a slow and costly process.

The Impact of AI on Procurement

Lio's AI agents are designed to integrate with existing enterprise systems, allowing them to read documents, evaluate suppliers, negotiate terms, and finalize transactions. This automation significantly reduces the time required to complete processes that previously took weeks. Keil asserts that processes that once took weeks can now be completed in just a few minutes thanks to Lio.

A striking example of Lio's efficiency is that of a global manufacturer that managed to automate 75% of its procurement operations in just six months. This transformation enables companies to manage their spending more effectively and seize cost-saving opportunities. Keil emphasizes that the startup is already helping businesses manage billions of dollars in corporate spending.

A New Approach to Procurement

Unlike traditional solutions that assist humans in their work, Lio offers an approach where AI agents directly execute workflows. Keil states that each previous generation of procurement technology was built on the assumption that humans would do the work and that technology would help them do it faster. Lio takes a fundamentally different approach by deploying AI agents that execute the workflow themselves.

Keil partnered with his friends Lukas Heinzmann and Till Wagner to launch Lio in 2023. Together, they created a virtual procurement workforce that operates on an AI-native platform with a comprehensive agentic infrastructure.

Competition and Outlook

Lio positions itself against giants like SAP Ariba and Oracle, as well as business process outsourcing providers and consulting firms. By automating routine tasks, Lio allows teams to focus on higher-value activities, such as negotiation and supplier analysis. Keil believes this transforms procurement from a back-office function into a much more powerful lever for business performance.

With this funding round, Lio plans to expand its presence in the United States and further enhance the capabilities of its AI agents, promising to redefine the landscape of enterprise procurement.
