LIPSTIP and AI: A New Era for Intellectual Property

Artificial intelligence continues to infiltrate professional sectors that, until recently, had largely escaped advanced digitization. After conquering the fields of marketing, software development, and customer support, it is now the turn of the intellectual property market to undergo significant digital transformation. In Pau, the deeptech startup LIPSTIP has announced the launch of an AI platform specifically designed for professionals in this sector, aiming to accelerate and secure legal analyses related to trademark protection.

A Startup Founded on Innovation

Founded in 2023 by Nicolas Girardin, Alexander Lerbs, and Nicolas Vonthron, LIPSTIP focuses on developing an artificial intelligence infrastructure dedicated to industrial property consulting firms. Unlike emerging legal tools that rely on generalist models, LIPSTIP offers an architecture specifically trained to address the challenges of trademark law and case law analysis. Currently, the platform is already in operation in six European firms.

Technology Serving Legal Analysis

The core of the technology developed by LIPSTIP is based on automating the analyses necessary for opposition and trademark protection procedures. The platform is capable of comparing products and services, analyzing similarities between distinctive signs, and assessing confusion risks across several dimensions:

  • Phonetic
  • Visual
  • Semantic
  • Conceptual

This technology relies on a case law database comprising several hundreds of thousands of decisions.

Addressing Structural Challenges in the Sector

This approach aims to address a structural limitation in the sector, where many specialized firms still rely on tedious manual research. Opposition procedures often require long hours of document analysis to identify comparable decisions, assess their relevance, and extract legally actionable elements. LIPSTIP aims to reduce this workload.

Promising Performance

The startup claims that its platform allows for analysis one hundred times faster and a detection accuracy twice as high compared to generalist AIs. Beyond these technical performances, LIPSTIP's positioning reflects a broader trend in the AI market: the emergence of specialized models capable of replicating business reasoning, rather than merely providing conversational capabilities.

A Crucial Distinction in Regulated Professions

In regulated professions, this distinction is essential. Generalist models primarily operate on statistical probabilities, with margins of error that are unacceptable in legal contexts. LIPSTIP strives to develop an AI capable of replicating analytical logics similar to those of intellectual property experts.

Ambition for Sector Transformation

"IP professionals are the only ones who can reduce the protection gap for European businesses, but they have been hindered by tools that have not evolved with them," says Nicolas Vonthron, co-founder of LIPSTIP. "Our ambition is to provide them with the precision and speed they deserve, through a fully sovereign AI."

By automating part of the legal analysis tasks, LIPSTIP seeks to transform the economy of the sector. The goal is not only to reduce the processing time of cases but also to enable firms to manage a larger volume of work without proportionally increasing their human resources.

Support and Strategic Collaborations

Supported by Hélioparc, the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region, and Aquiti Gestion, LIPSTIP is also conducting its research in partnership with the University of Pau and the Pays de l'Adour as well as CY Tech.
