Lovable: A Meteoric Rise in Vibe Coding
The European startup Lovable, specializing in vibe coding, recently announced that it has surpassed $500 million in annual revenue. This impressive achievement was shared with TechCrunch, highlighting the company's upward trajectory. Last February, Lovable had already announced that it had exceeded $400 million in revenue. In August 2024, the company expressed its ambition to reach $1 billion in annual revenue in the following year. However, it is not on track to double this figure by summer, although its growth remains impressive for a company founded in late 2023 that has not yet been in existence for three years.
Massive and Diverse Usage
Lovable has been used to create over 50 million projects, with a current pace of one million new projects per week. An internal survey reveals that the majority of users on the platform do not come from technical backgrounds. However, they leverage Lovable to develop software intended for monetization or professional use. Users include founders, designers, and salespeople who are building websites, online stores, and internal tools such as CRMs, inventory management systems, and HR platforms. This diversity of applications illustrates the disruptive potential of vibe coding on traditional SaaS models, which are perceived as threatened by these new AI-powered platforms.
The Challenge of Sustainability
Despite its success, Lovable and its users still need to prove the long-term viability of projects developed through vibe coding. The question of software maintenance, often complex and costly, remains a major challenge. The software operates almost like a living organism, relying on a stack of dependencies, third-party services, and constantly evolving infrastructures, which can lead to malfunctions. This is why so many companies choose to buy rather than build, preferring that others be responsible for its proper functioning.
The true test for Lovable will be to demonstrate the sustainability of its projects as the platform matures. If project abandonment rates remain low, this could signal a lasting transformation in the software market, marking the advent of the SaaSpocalypse. Lovable and other vibe coders will need to transparently report abandoned projects for these platforms to gain credibility.
