AI: A Solution to Reduce Healthcare Costs According to Mark Cuban

Mark Cuban, known for his role as co-founder of Cost Plus Drugs, argues that artificial intelligence could play a crucial role in reducing healthcare costs within companies. According to him, employers could leverage AI chatbots to analyze their health contracts and uncover hidden costs that inflate their expenses.

Cuban emphasizes that AI-based tools, such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini, are capable of sifting through often lengthy and complex health contracts. These language models can identify areas where companies are likely to pay more than necessary or be disadvantaged by obscure clauses.

"Run all your health contracts through Claude or another model, and just ask the question: 'Where am I getting taken advantage of?'" Cuban advised during his appearance on the recently aired podcast "Digital Health Heavyweights."

AI to Simplify Understanding of Contracts

The entrepreneur also highlighted AI's ability to make health contracts, which can span several hundred pages, more accessible and understandable. He explained that using language models helps overcome the complexity of details and fine print that often eludes the human eye.

"That's why I recommend using LLMs. Our eyes glaze over as soon as we try to decipher the details and fine print of these endless contracts," he clarified. "Every definition, every word in your contract is potentially used to disadvantage you."

Cuban's Distrust of Insurers

Mark Cuban, through his company Cost Plus Drugs, seeks to make prescription drug prices more transparent. He has always been critical of health insurers and pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs), whom he accuses of driving up costs with opaque pricing and difficult-to-understand contracts.

In the podcast, Cuban reiterated criticisms he had recently shared on X, emphasizing that employers often lack visibility into the true costs of the care they are financing for their employees.

"No company, including yours, knows the real cost of the care it buys for its employees and their families. Not a single one," he stated in a message posted on Sunday.

Towards Autonomous Healthcare Management

Cuban clarified that using AI to analyze health contracts is just a first step. He encourages employers to understand the financial risks associated with their choices, rather than blindly trusting insurers.

"People tend to believe that insurance will offer them more than what they invested," he said. "That’s never the case."

For companies with the necessary resources, Cuban recommends exploring the possibility of entering into direct agreements with hospitals, clinics, or physician groups. This approach could allow them to negotiate better rates and gain better control over their healthcare spending.
