Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, recently shared his vision on the role of artificial intelligence (AI) researchers during an episode of the "No Priors" podcast. According to him, it is not necessary to have large teams to achieve significant advancements in this field. A small team composed of elite researchers could be sufficient to make notable progress in AI.
Zuckerberg expressed these ideas alongside Priscilla Chan, his wife, while discussing the Biohub, a nonprofit organization they founded together. The Biohub's mission is to use AI and biology to cure, prevent, or manage all diseases by the end of the century. He emphasized that while the market for AI researchers is very dynamic, the Biohub offers a unique mission that sets it apart from other organizations.
“To make progress in AI, you don’t need hundreds or thousands of researchers,” Zuckerberg stated. “I think you can really make progress with a very strong group of a dozen or a few dozen people.”
He also noted that AI researchers have many career options, but the work at the Biohub stands out due to its cutting-edge biology component. “They could go work on language models or other topics in any of the major labs, but those labs don’t have the cutting-edge biology component attached to it,” he added.
Zuckerberg insisted that if the goal is to combine cutting-edge biology and AI, “I don’t think there’s another organization in the world that does both cutting-edge biology and cutting-edge AI.”
He also expressed optimism about the possibility that the Biohub's mission could be achieved more quickly due to advancements in AI. However, he acknowledged that access to computing power remains a major constraint for labs around the world. “When it comes to what you decide to do next, I think it’s a normal process of managing constraints,” he said.
“It’s a dynamic system. So if you fix one thing, there will obviously be other things to work on afterward,” he explained. “I think the advancements in AI are really, obviously, very exciting.”
Finally, he shared that the current moment in AI leaves him with a feeling “of a combination of energy and exhaustion,” highlighting the challenges and opportunities presented by this constantly evolving field.
