Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, recently announced the launch of Incognito Chat, an AI messaging service that promises unprecedented privacy. This new product stands out due to the complete absence of conversation storage on the company's servers. Unlike other incognito chat services, Incognito Chat employs end-to-end encryption, a feature that has been removed from direct messages on Instagram.
Zuckerberg emphasized that while other applications offer incognito modes, they still have the ability to access incoming and outgoing messages. With Incognito Chat, Meta assures that even the company cannot read users' conversations.
Comparison with Other Chat Services
In comparison, Google retains temporary chat data in its Gemini service for up to 72 hours. On the other hand, ChatGPT stores temporary conversations for up to 30 days, and Claude's incognito chats are kept for a minimum of 30 days. Neither Anthropic nor OpenAI has responded to requests for comments regarding their data retention policies.
Legal Context and Implications
ChatGPT logs are at the center of recent lawsuits, particularly related to tragic incidents in Tumbler Ridge in Canada and at Florida State University. A case involving the New York Times even led to a court order to retain conversations indefinitely. Google is also facing a similar lawsuit after a Gemini user was allegedly encouraged to take dangerous actions.
Deployment and Underlying Technology
Meta's Incognito Chat relies on Private Processing technology, already used for data processing in WhatsApp. The rollout of this new feature is expected in the coming months, both on WhatsApp and the Meta AI app.
