The Wall Street Journal recently reported that Meta has reorganized its artificial intelligence structure, creating a new group of engineers specializing in applied AI. This team is distinct from the one led by Alexandr Wang, who is now responsible for AI Superintelligence at Meta. According to the journal, this new team reports directly to CTO Andrew Bosworth.
Meta had previously invested over $14 billion to acquire a 49% stake in Scale AI, the data-labeling company founded by Wang. He was recruited by Meta last summer to lead its AI efforts.
Rumors of Tensions and Clarifications
Last week, the Times of India published a headline claiming that Mark Zuckerberg might be "done" with Alexandr Wang, Meta's highest-paid employee, due to the ongoing reorganization. This article quickly circulated on Reddit and was picked up by IDN Financials. However, Meta spokesperson Andy Stone disputed these claims on X, and the Times of India has since amended its headline.
Stone clarified that Wang contributed to the creation of the new AI team and continues to lead his projects at Meta, emphasizing that his influence is growing.
A Photo to Ease Tensions
Zuckerberg's posting of the photo appears to be a response to the rumors, aiming to show that collaboration with Wang is proceeding normally. Although the Times of India article generated interest on X, Zuckerberg chose to share the photo on Threads, a platform where discussions about Meta's internal politics are less common.
Despite the turmoil, the photo simply shows two smiling colleagues, and for those unaware of the rumors, it requires no special context. One of the most popular comments under the photo was a request for context, followed by confusion about Wang's identity, with some mistaking him for Roy Lee from Cluely.
