Amid market uncertainty, geopolitical tensions, and the transformation related to AI, American companies are going through a stressful period. McKinsey's key partners are also feeling this pressure. The consulting giant has intensified leadership training for senior partners, doubling participation in less than two years, Papo stated.

While senior partners once attended occasional leadership programs, participation is now "an ongoing expectation of the role." This includes immersive group sessions, targeted training at key career moments, and an increasing investment in coaching and support, Papo added.

Growing Complexity of Leadership Roles

Papo noted that the program's expansion reflects a rapidly evolving corporate landscape, where the complexity of senior leaders' roles is increasing "at a pace we have never seen before." Heather Stefanski, Head of Learning and Development and Partner at McKinsey, stated that executive teams focused on four to five critical issues a decade ago. Now, they may address up to ten.

"You add all the uncertainties related to AI, and it’s no longer just about grooming successors for the top, but about elevating the entire leadership level of the organization," Stefanski said. Papo clarified that a CEO's role previously focused primarily on profits and shareholder returns. Now, it is a much more complex role, with various stakeholders and demands—from politics and geopolitics to supply chain risks, Stefanski added. AI adds another layer of complexity to the mix.
