Meta Accused: AI Allegedly Biased Layoffs
Employees of Meta are suing the company over layoffs they believe resulted from discriminatory selection systems based on AI.
According to a complaint filed in a federal court in California, Meta allegedly used internal AI systems to generate lists of layoffs during the reduction of 8,000 employees in May. These systems reportedly disproportionately targeted employees with disabilities as well as those on medical, family, or parental leave. One plaintiff was informed of their layoff just two days before giving birth, according to the complaint.
The selection criteria allegedly included performance evaluations, productivity, work quantity, and measured use of AI.
A spokesperson for Meta denied these allegations, stating that all personnel decisions are made by humans. The plaintiffs are seeking a preliminary injunction to retain their jobs until arbitration is resolved.
