Meta and Anthropic: Towards an Agreement on AI Capabilities
Meta is reportedly in talks with Anthropic to lease computing capacity from its data centers. According to the New York Times, the deal could reach up to $10 billion over two years. Anthropic proposed this arrangement in June. Meta is still reviewing it, and either party could decide to withdraw. For Meta, this would open a new source of revenue. CEO Mark Zuckerberg had already informed investors that he might sell excess capacity if the company's AI demand did not keep pace.
Meta plans to spend up to $145 billion this year, primarily on AI. The company is also developing new revenue sources with paid AI subscriptions like "Meta One" and is even investing in space solar energy for its data centers. Anthropic needs this additional capacity due to the rising demand for Claude Code. The company has already signed a $45 billion contract with SpaceXAI. In the long term, however, Anthropic aims to build its own data centers and has recruited former Google executives to lead this effort.
