Meta and Zuckerberg Bet on the Rise of Personal AI Agents

Meta is fully committed to AI, and in the near future, the company plans to make a significant leap forward in the realm of personal AI agents capable of acting on your behalf.

During the second quarter 2026 earnings call, CEO Mark Zuckerberg presented a comprehensive vision of how the company envisions personal agents and the steps it will take to make them viable for users, as well as to convince less tech-savvy individuals to give them a try:

• "Soon, we will have agents capable of working 24/7 on your behalf to help you achieve your goals and improve your life, your health, your relationships, your finances, everything you wish for."

The first area where agents have truly taken off is programming. However, engineers are more technical and willing to spend time getting these agents to work. Therefore, to build great personal agents, it is essential that it be a consumer product that works immediately and is simple enough for billions of people to adopt and use.

Zuckerberg seems to be trying to differentiate his vision from that of companies like Anthropic and OpenAI, which have heavily invested in programming-focused and enterprise-oriented agents. Google has also made strides in personal AI agents with its Gemini Spark tool, which I found very good, but almost to a disturbing degree. It is currently difficult to know how Meta's potential agents might compare.

However, Meta may face challenges in the personal agent space. Its AI efforts are still lagging behind the largest AI labs. Unlike Google or Microsoft, it does not have access to users' email or document ecosystems in the same way. Additionally, Meta must navigate a trust issue related to its smart glasses, and the general distrust towards the company could make people hesitant to use its agents.

The company plans to share more information about its personal agents "soon," Zuckerberg stated. Earlier in the call, he mentioned that personal agents will be "the foundation of our next wave of products and revenue streams in the months and years to come."

Zuckerberg also highlighted Meta's commercial agents available on WhatsApp and Messenger, noting that over a million businesses use them each week. These commercial agents will also be deployed on Instagram, he added.

Meta's significant move towards agents follows the launch of its Muse Spark AI model last quarter, which was recently updated with a version 1.1 offering improved coding capabilities. The company has restructured to focus intensely on AI, having apparently shifted 7,000 employees to work on new AI initiatives, although it also laid off around 8,000 people in May. Meta is also investing heavily in computing, noting during today's earnings that it plans to spend between $130 and $145 billion on capital expenditures in 2026. Yesterday, it announced that it is building a 1-gigawatt data center campus in partnership with BlackRock.

During the second quarter 2026 earnings call, Zuckerberg also mentioned that Instagram now has over 2 billion daily active users.
