Meta Restructures Reality Labs for a Native AI Approach
In a bold move, Meta has begun transforming a major division of its Reality Labs to become fully "AI-native." This initiative involves the creation of "pods," work units composed of "AI Builders" and "AI Pod Leads." This internal transformation aims to align teams with a more modern and technological approach.
Meta clarified that this reorganization is not related to the recent layoffs within Reality Labs. Indeed, according to an internal memo leaked by Business Insider, Meta has decided to reclassify some of its employees as "AI Builders" and organize them into pods. This change affects approximately 1,000 employees within Reality Labs and is part of a broader company strategy to adopt smaller teams and leverage artificial intelligence.
A New Structure for Increased Efficiency
The pilot program, announced last month, pertains to the Reality Labs team dedicated to developing tools for developers. From now on, all members of this division will be assigned one of three titles: AI Builder, AI Pod Lead, or AI Org Lead. This new organization aims to create a more horizontal structure, a model that Meta's CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, strongly supports.
The memo emphasizes that the primary goal is to bring about a significant change in engineers' productivity and product quality. To achieve this, Meta is fundamentally reorganizing its work methods, structure, and the way teams support each other.
Zuckerberg's Vision for the Future
When asked about this reorganization, Meta referred Business Insider to previous statements by Zuckerberg, who predicted that 2026 would be the year when AI would radically transform the way we work. He envisions that projects that once required large teams could now be managed by a single "very talented" person.
Each pod consists of a small group of AI Builders focused on specific outcomes, often working across multiple disciplines. For instance, engineers may be called upon to perform design tasks as needed. Some Meta employees have already begun to identify themselves as AI Builders on LinkedIn, according to previous reports from Business Insider.
AI-Optimized Oversight
These pods are led by Pod Leads, who are responsible for daily operations. They are themselves supervised by Org Leads, who also handle performance evaluations and promotions, processes that will be supported by unspecified AI systems.
The memo specifies that the overall team size will remain unchanged despite this new structure. Although Meta has recently laid off hundreds of employees, including within Reality Labs, a company spokesperson stated that this reorganization is not related to these workforce reductions.
