Meta has just launched Forum, a new application that aims to transform Facebook groups into an enhanced community discussion space, thanks to the integration of artificial intelligence. This initiative marks Meta's attempt to revitalize its online groups, drawing inspiration from the Reddit model.
Unlike a grand launch, Forum has been quietly introduced into the Facebook ecosystem. However, this discretion should not be interpreted as a lack of ambition. Forum could become a laboratory for Meta's AI tools and a meeting place for online communities.
Features of Forum
Forum stands out for its ability to bring Facebook groups together in a dedicated interface. Users can interact under pseudonyms, making it easier to follow conversations and manage discussions. This approach aims to bypass Facebook's main news feed, often cluttered with various content such as Reels, advertisements, and dubious posts.
One of Forum's flagship features is the " Ask a Question" tab, powered by AI. This system allows users to ask questions and receive answers drawn from group discussions, offering an experience similar to a combination of ChatGPT and Reddit. This could save users from sifting through hundreds of comments to find a relevant answer.
Additionally, Meta has integrated an AI assistant to help administrators moderate content and manage communities. This feature is crucial, as Facebook groups can sometimes become chaotic spaces where moderation is a challenge.
A Renewed Strategy with AI
The launch of Forum is part of a broader strategy by Meta, which seeks to create authentic conversation spaces, contrasting with viral content. This approach seems to directly target Reddit, which continues to attract users seeking meaningful discussions.
This is not Meta's first attempt in this area. In 2014, the company launched an application called Groups, which was abandoned in 2017. The difference today lies in the use of AI, which appears to be the driving force behind many new projects at Meta.
Recently, Meta also introduced Instants, a photo-sharing application reminiscent of BeReal and Snapchat, and Meta Edits, which strongly resembles CapCut. These initiatives demonstrate Meta's willingness, under the leadership of Mark Zuckerberg, to leverage the productivity gains offered by AI to develop new applications, as reported by the Wall Street Journal.
