A Massive Investment for Alberta
Meta recently announced the construction of its first data center in Canada, located in Alberta. This ambitious project is expected to generate approximately 300 operational jobs once completed. The center, specifically designed to optimize artificial intelligence (AI) workloads, will have an impressive capacity of 1 gigawatt. This will be Meta's 33rd data center worldwide, marking a significant milestone in the company's expansion.
The total investment for this project amounts to $9 billion, with an additional $40 million allocated for local infrastructure improvements. Construction has begun in Sturgeon County, near Edmonton, representing a financial commitment of over $13 billion CAD. This 1 gigawatt data center is designed to support the technologies that billions of people use daily to connect and interact.
State-of-the-Art Infrastructure
This new data center will be Meta's 33rd globally. The company anticipates that the construction site will employ over 3,000 construction workers at its peak. Once operational, the site will offer 300 permanent jobs. In addition, Meta will invest approximately $60 million CAD (around $42 million USD) to enhance local infrastructure, which is expected to have a positive impact on the region.
A representative from Meta specified that the center will cover an area of 2.9 million square feet and span 1,750 acres. This vast space is designed to accommodate the next generation of AI systems, integrating innovations ranging from hardware to network design and cooling systems.
Cooling Innovation
The data center will utilize a "closed-loop liquid cooling system with dry cooling." This advanced technology is designed to reduce reliance on a continuous water supply, a crucial aspect for environmental sustainability. Meta expects this center to be fully operational within 2 to 3 years.
Alanna Hnatiw, mayor of Sturgeon County, expressed her enthusiasm for the project, highlighting the economic benefits it will bring to the region, particularly in terms of jobs and long-term tax revenues. She stated, "We are excited to partner with our new neighbors to realize this shared vision."
Ongoing Expansion in the United States
In the United States, Meta already operates 28 data centers, including the major site in Richland Parish, Louisiana. This campus is set to be Meta's largest to date, covering 4 million square feet and boasting a computing capacity of over 2 gigawatts. This ongoing expansion reflects Meta's commitment to strengthening its infrastructure to support its ambitions in artificial intelligence.
