Meta and EssilorLuxottica: A Partnership for Innovation
Meta, in collaboration with its partner EssilorLuxottica, is preparing to introduce two new Ray-Ban glasses models that incorporate artificial intelligence features. These models, named "Scriber" and "Blazer," have recently passed a crucial milestone by clearing tests from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), indicating an imminent market launch.
This initiative continues Meta's efforts to innovate in the field of wearable devices. Filings made with the FCC, published earlier this month, confirm that these glasses are ready for production, suggesting a forthcoming launch. Historically, Meta has unveiled its previous Ray-Ban glasses models shortly after their FCC approval, as was the case with the second generation launched at the end of 2023.
Details Still Partially Under Wraps
Although the FCC documents are largely redacted, some information has leaked. The new models are designated under the commercial names "RayBan Meta Scriber" and "RayBan Meta Blazer." The Blazer model will be offered in two sizes, regular and large, thus expanding options for consumers.
Another notable element is the inclusion of a charging case in the tests, indicating that the new glasses will benefit from a convenient charging solution for on-the-go use. However, the specifics of the new features remain to be discovered, as the documents provide little detail on this matter.
Model Numbers and Technological Advancements
The new Scriber and Blazer models carry the respective model numbers RW7001 and RW7002. This significant change from the previous model numbers, which ranged from RW4002 to RW4014, could signal a major technological advancement. This might include the integration of a new chip, although this remains to be confirmed.
Another important innovation is the use of the Wi-Fi 6 UNII-4 band by these new models. This technology promises to enhance the reliability of high-speed data transfers, which would be particularly beneficial for applications such as livestreaming and other features requiring real-time video transmissions.
Expanding Commercial Success
The AI Ray-Ban glasses have achieved notable success for Meta and EssilorLuxottica. According to the latest report from EssilorLuxottica, over seven million pairs were sold last year. For the years 2023 and 2024, combined sales have reached two million units. The company aims to increase its production capacity to 20–30 million units per year by the end of the year, according to a Bloomberg report.
In 2025, Meta expanded its partnership with EssilorLuxottica by launching a first pair of AI glasses under the Oakley brand, as well as a pair of Ray-Ban Display glasses featuring a monocular display. These initiatives reflect Meta's commitment to diversifying and enriching its offering of wearable AI products.
Strategic Realignment of Meta
Mark Zuckerberg recently emphasized the growing importance of glasses and wearable devices in Meta's strategy. During the latest earnings call, he stated that glasses sales had more than tripled the previous year, describing them as one of the fastest-growing segments in consumer electronics.
As part of this realignment, Meta has reduced its investments in virtual reality, laying off 1,000 employees from Reality Labs and closing several VR game studios. Although the company initially planned to shut down its Horizon Worlds metaverse project, it ultimately decided to maintain it in response to user demands.
