Meticulous: A Strategic Fundraising to Accelerate AI Development

The London-based company Meticulous, founded by brothers Gabriel and Quentin Spencer-Harper, has recently raised $15 million in a Series A funding round. This round was led by Ethan Kurzweil from the San Francisco-based venture capital firm Chemistry, with participation from Menlo Ventures. Several prominent individual investors also contributed, including Lachy Groom, a former Stripe executive, Jason Warner, co-founder of Poolside, and Arash Ferdowsi, co-founder of Dropbox. Other influential figures such as Scott Belsky, former CPO of Adobe, Guillermo Rauch, founder of Vercel, Calvin French-Owen, former engineering lead at OpenAI, Caitlin Colgrove, CTO of Hex, and Jason Ginsberg, former engineering lead at Cursor, also supported the initiative.

A Challenge for Developers in the Face of AI

With the rise of AI agents capable of generating code at lightning speed, development teams often find themselves overwhelmed by the pace of revisions and testing required. This situation leads to a backlog of bugs in codebases, slowing down the development process. Meticulous aims to address this issue by enabling developers to trust the code generated by AI, thus allowing them to ship their projects faster.

The Innovative Functionality of Meticulous

Meticulous offers a unique approach to ensure the reliability of AI-generated code. The company first analyzes a developer's codebase and the target application, then establishes a checklist of edge cases. These edge cases represent rare scenarios or inputs that could reveal logical failures or application crash risks.

For every code change, whether made by an AI agent or a human developer, Meticulous simulates user flows before and after the change to test the potentially affected edge cases. Before the code is integrated into the company's codebase, a detailed report is provided to the developer. This report includes a series of snapshots illustrating how each edge case is impacted by the code change.

Quentin Spencer-Harper explains that these snapshots allow for a quick visualization of the impact of modifications. "In just a few minutes, you understand the full impact of the change — you see it right in front of you — and you can therefore ship almost as fast as your AI can write code." The system is deterministic, allowing for the detection of any relevant uncovered cases for a given change, and alerts the user and the agent. While changes are initially reviewed by human developers, they can choose to push them live or request adjustments from the coding agent.

Currently, the company is only testing frontend code but plans to expand to full-stack testing.

Impressive Growth

Over the past year, Meticulous has seen its annual recurring revenue (ARR) increase fivefold. Among its clients are renowned companies such as Notion, ElevenLabs, Dropbox, Wiz, and LaunchDarkly. The founders, Quentin and Gabriel, bring rich engineering experience, having worked at Palantir for over 10 years and at Dropbox, respectively.

Quentin recalls his time at Palantir, before the era of AI, when engineers spent a significant amount of time thinking about code and ensuring it worked correctly. "At that scale of complexity, there was no product or solution that came close to solving this problem," he says. Meticulous was born from this reflection, aiming to tackle the challenges posed by millions of lines of code and thousands of edge cases.

Future Ambitions of Meticulous

With this new funding, Meticulous plans to invest in marketing to increase its visibility. "Historically, we have relied solely on word of mouth," explains Gabriel. "We are changing that; we want every company to know about Meticulous."

The company also aims to expand its testing capabilities to include backend and performance, while increasing its workforce. Currently composed of 20 members, the team could grow to 30 to 40 people within the next 12 months. Gabriel emphasizes the importance of maintaining a "small but exceptional" team.

Meticulous is actively recruiting forward-deployed engineers (FDEs), a crucial role for many European AI companies. These engineers integrate directly with clients to identify and resolve issues using Meticulous technology. "The market for talent is very competitive," admits Gabriel, but he remains confident in the appeal of their project to software engineers.
