Microsoft: 70% of Its AI Revenue Comes from OpenAI
The majority of Microsoft's AI revenue comes from OpenAI, according to new revelations. A report from Bloomberg estimates this amount at $24.1 billion for the fiscal year ending in June, accounting for about 70% of Microsoft's total revenue in the AI sector. CEO Satya Nadella stated at the end of March that the AI business was on track to exceed $37 billion per year.
As part of their agreement, OpenAI pays Microsoft for computing power, model development costs, and a share of the revenue.
This dependency explains much of Microsoft's recent communication. The same company, long known for its vendor lock-in, has begun promoting open-weight models and warning against certain proprietary AI models that could capture the value of entire sectors. Nadella has also criticized AI labs like OpenAI and Anthropic for their opposition to distillation, a practice that involves training models on the outputs of proprietary models to build competitors with less effort. Chinese manufacturers have reportedly been particularly aggressive with this approach. Meanwhile, Microsoft has gradually integrated its own AI models into its Office products.
